This company are disrupting the aerospace industry with the next generation aerospace vehicle that is the world’s first fully reusable horizontal takeoff and landing, single stage to orbit spaceplane, delivering people and light cargo to low earth orbit (LEO) and multiple terrestrial destinations with aircraft-like operations. We are on the lookout for a Lead GNC Engineer (remote with minimal travel to Seattle)! 

This position will be responsible for development of GN&C subsystem requirements including actuation and effector subsystems; design and development of the ascent, on orbit and blended (propulsive and aerodynamic) descent flight control laws; design and development of the subsystem; component selection, and integration of the GN&C with the aerospace vehicle, ensuring compatibility with other subsystems and that missions are met with reliability and accuracy. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, identifying the optimal guidance, navigation, and control subsystems to be incorporated into the aerospace vehicle. 

Position Responsibilities

  • Define requirements for the GN&C systems.
  • Support the planning and analysis of vehicle trajectories and performance.
  • Develop algorithms to support assessment of the GN&C performance.
  • Create models, simulations and tools to support GN&C system development and analysis.
  • Support design reviews, analyses, simulations, and testing to ensure delivery of products that meet or exceed customer requirements and expectations.
  • Select and size actuators and control aerosurfaces appropriate to the selected design.
  • Select and size exoatmospheric reaction control system (RCS) appropriate to the selected design.
  • Determine the types, sizes, and gimbal ranges of rocket engine gimbals required for vehicle attitude control.
  • Define the control laws for the blending of flight control systems between rocket engine and aerosurfaces.
  • Determine the optimal navigation system to be incorporated into the vehicle.
  • Write and test flight software applications.
  • Develop appropriate control laws.
  • Conduct make/buy decisions on critical hardware.
  • Support development of Statements of Work and proposals and preparation of reports and briefings.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of astrodynamics, classical dynamics, orbital mechanics, stability analysis, estimation theory, modeling and simulation, and software development.
  • Master's degree in aerospace, mechanical, electrical or systems engineering or related fields or Bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years’ experience.
  • Experience with spacecraft and aircraft attitude determination and control.
  • Strong software skills.
  • Experience with analysis or design of GN&C systems for launch operations; orbital operations, including both rendezvous maneuvers and proximity operations, reentry operations, terminal glide, and landing.
  • Experience with rocket engine gimbals.
  • Experience in Matlab/Simulink.
